Hot Tips
MAXIMIZE YOUR INVESTMENT
Did you know that heating and air conditioning accounts for 44% of the energy used in the average U.S. home? That’s why it makes sense to maximize the existing efficiency of your oil heat system. You’ll be more comfortable while saving money at the same time.
Today’s heating and cooling systems are far more efficient than those from ten or twenty years. Back then, systems typically averaged 60% percent efficiency. Today’s systems are in the 95% - 98% range.

COMBAT HEAT LOSS
One key factor in transferring the efficiency of today’s oil heat throughout your home is to reduce loss along the way. For example, properly insulated heat ducts can lead to dramatic improvements in comfort and reduced costs – as much as 40%. Also check for leaks. If your ducts leak you don't just lose hot air. In fact, cold air can be drawn into the ducts when the blower fan is on. That cold air is then delivered to your living area. If the ducts are in an unheated area (attic or crawlspace), they should be insulated.

Regular cleaning of your air filters, supply and return vents is also important to make sure all the heat is getting through. It can improve your system efficiency by as much as 10%. Regular cleaning and servicing by a trained professional is also important to insure that your system is working safely.

Indirect heat loss can be improved with proper weatherstripping of windows and doors, use of insulated windows and even adding insulated draperies to prevent heat loss, especially during evening hours.

COMMON SENSE TIPS FOR STAYING WARM
It may sound obvious, but setting your thermostat at the lowest comfortable temperature when you are home, closing off rooms when they are not in use and wearing layers of warmer clothing will allow you to save on overall heating costs.

The condition of the air can also have a great deal to do with your perceived comfort. This is especially true of moisture. Air conditioning is not just for the summer. Using a humidifier can aid your comfort by adding moisture to the air. Additional moisture in the air makes it feel warmer and helps to remedy the drier air that result from winter and heating.

Using ceiling fans can also help. Warm air rises, so a ceiling fan can help push it back down where you are. If you have children, ask them to play at a table or on the sofa, as they will feel warmer than on the floor. Finally, try moving your furniture away from outside doors and windows. No sense sitting where your room will be coldest
